In this 5-day workshop, award-winning artist John Cosby will show students an innovative method of color mixing that will simplify their approach to painting. Cosby will show students how to identify and describe big value shapes within a composition and mix those values on their palettes in “pools of colors,” which will then be tinted or toned to match the colors in the scene. This technique of mixing “pools of color” will increase the student’s ability to accurately identify values and colors in their paintings. The workshop will consist of daily demonstrations, ample discussion, and individualized attention. The class will begin and end indoors, then move outdoors to numerous locations throughout the region.

Supplys

This 4 day workshop is one I only do every other year. The Chatham area of the Cape is so paintable with all it's maritime charm. We will be studying a way of painting the scene so that it looks correct as to space right from the beginning. If you cannot place your shapes correctly and with tonal accuracy in the beginning your chances of finishing well diminish. This method of mixing 4 to 5 puddles of tonaly accurate paint before you begin the marks on the canvas gets it done quickly!

Supplies

I have found that Laguna is a great place to teach with it's gentle weather and azure coves. This workshop will focus on painting the shoreline. We will be addressing Figure in the environment and the anatomy of water and waves as they interact with the rocky and sandy shoreline. You will paint every day as I teach through both demonstration and hands on. This class is open to all levels as my teaching is style designed to be "To your individual needs"
